I Am a Craft Brewer

I Am A Craft Brewer from I Am A Craft Brewer on Vimeo.

“I Am A Craft Brewer” is a collaborative video representing the camaraderie, character and integrity of the American Craft Brewing movement. Created by Greg Koch, CEO of the Stone Brewing Co. and Chris & Jared of Redtail Media…and more than 35 amazing craft brewers from all over the country.  The video was shown to a packed audience of 1700 craft brewers and industry members at the 2009 Craft Brewers Conference as an introduction to Greg’s Keynote Speech entitled “Be Remarkable: Collaboration Ethics Camaraderie Passion.” As is tradition for the CBC Keynote, a toast to the audience was offered. This time, the beers offered for the toast were all collaboratively brewed craft beers including Isabella Proximus, Collaboration Not Litigation, AleSmith/Mikkeller/Stone Belgian Style Triple, Jolly Pumpkin/Nøgne-Ø/Stone Special Holiday Ale, and 2009 Symposium Ale “Audacity of Hops.”

Last Year’s Model

I guess some people need encouragement to not constantly upgrade to the newest model.  Hence, the new online geek movement, Last Year’s Model.

Great idea.  I’ve been doing it for years.  If you’re a regular reader, you know that I just replaced my desk lamp style 17” iMac with a new iMac (and the printer, which was much older than the computer).  My car is going on seven years old, has nearly 120,000 miles on it (I used to drive a lot for my last job), and is still running strong.  Last year I replaced my iPod Mini (the original iPod Mini, mind you) with a refurbished iPod Classic.  And recently I replaced my aging Sony Ericsson phone with an iPhone (again, refurbished).

The 5.1 surround sound receiver in my living room is probably close to ten years old.  The other (stereo) receiver in our house is much older than that (it’s Carrie’s stereo she had in college).  I’ve yet to replace our 2nd TV, the 25” tube one, with a flat screen (I might do that later this year).

In short, I tend to hang on to things until they wear out.  I could list stuff all day, but I won’t bore you.  There are exceptions, of course.  Like replacing the DVD/SACD player that was only a few years old with a Blu-Ray player.  (Although, I shouldn’t say “replaced”, as I still have it, since the Blu-Ray player doesn’t support SACD.)

The movement is about “being green”, but I’ve never thought of it that way.  I’ve just never liked being wasteful, and I like to get my money’s worth out of things.

So, how about it?  What old technology (or other products) do you still have (or had for a really long time).

Dead Goat Porter

I got off a little early from work today, so I decided to swing by Goose Island to kill some time until Carrie gets off work. They currently have the Dead Goat Porter as their “Cask Conditioned” ale.

Wow. This is a really amazing porter. Smooth and well balanced, with a nice creamy head. I’m so glad I stopped by, since the Cask Conditioned ales don’t last long.

It’s too bad they don’t fill growlers from the cask ales (only the draft beers are available in growlers).

Hopefully, I’ll get off work a little early tomorrow, so I can stop by and have this again before it runs out.

If you happen to live in Chicago, try to get to Goose Island (Clybourn location) before this runs out.

Pet Peeve

I really, really hate it when people say “ink cartridge” when they mean “toner cartridge”.  I know that 95% of the population probably doesn’t understand the difference, but it still really just bugs the shit out of me.  (Pet peeves don’t have to be rational.)

Best 99¢ I Ever Spent

With Apple’s 1 Billion Downloads App Store promotion going on, I’ve been downloading quite a few apps that I’ve been meaning to check out, but never really got around to it.  Most of them have been free apps, or the “lite” trial versions of paid apps, but a few have been regular paid apps.  One of those is Flight Control.

Seriously, if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you need to go download this game.  Do it now, while it’s still only 99¢ (it’s on sale to promote its release).

Just don’t blame me when half of your day suddenly disappears!

Not Really a Protest

I’ve got news for you all:  It’s not really a protest when it’s organized, bought and paid for by corporate lobbyists.

(And, how come for the past eight years, people who protested the war and all of the other disastrous policies of the previous administration were “traitors”, but people duped into protesting taxes for the rich are somehow patriotic heroes?  It’s funny how that “liberal media” works.)

Testing, Testing

If this works, it means I successfully posted using iBlogger from my iPhone.

UPDATE: Well, it looks like it worked, but I really wasn’t expecting them to automatically stick an ad at the end of the post!

Record Store Day

This Saturday (April 18) is Record Store Day.  It should be interesting to check out.  I might stop by one of the participating stores to pick up the Wilco DVD and the My Morning Jacket vinyl EP.

UPDATE:  It appears that their website is down right now.  Maybe it’s a sign of high interest in the event?

Moving Pains

More fallout from the move to georgekrueger.com – I found that some of the settings in the software for the site had retained the old domain, so some things were still pointing to the wrong place.  (I found this out when I was trying to search for a Weiss recipe that I had posted, and all of the search results came back linked to the wrong URLs.)

I’ve found and corrected the error.

(UPDATE:  Apparently fixing this hosed the RSS/Atom feeds, so sorry for all of duplicates!)
